The redone basement will accommodate a bedroom, bathroom and family room. The Tomlinson crew is working now on a 12-foot extension to the kitchen at the back of the house.

She's pleased with the cost. Average new construction costs run at about $175 a square foot. She's acquired 660 square feet of newly usable space for about half that. Lifting the house cost $28,000, about the same as it would have cost to dig the basement deeper. Refinishing it will cost another $27,000.

"I'm really impressed with what they've done," she says. "I've got a whole new floor with lots of sunshine. I'd recommend this procedure to anyone who needs more space."
